Our School History

The first: "Mafikeng Undenominational Public School was established on 7 August 1895 in the Public Hall on the corner of Main and Robinson Streets- on the site of the present Public Prosecutor - by Mr. W.J Pugh. In 1898 a new school was built near the eastern end of Main Street.

On 15 July 1915 a new building was opened on this site. It is presently the Primary School. The School obtained High School status in January 1932 and was separated from the Primary School with just over 100 learners. In 1937 the High School moved to its present location. Over the years the school building grew in at least seven phases. The second phase was completed when the school hall, the laboratories, the CAT class and the toilet block were taken into use.

The school badge was designed in 1934 by two teachers, Ms. Laubcher (neé Florence) and Ms. Reading (neé Fodisch). In 1998 Ms. Alletta Klynsmith suggested that we enlarge the eagle to make it more prominent. The Bureau of Heraldry in Pretoria assisted us and the result is our present badge which registered.

At the same time we changed our school’s name from Mafeking to Mafikeng. The badge consists of three colours, red, white and green and they were the colours of the first principal, Mr Jackson’s old college.

The eagle was taken from the memorial of one of the most famous boys, Captain Andrew Beuchamp Proctor, V.C., D.S.O., D.F.M., M.M. The eagle rests on a number of stones and rocks – a reference to Mafikeng or Mahikeng – “A place of stones”.

The motto “Ne Cede” means “DO NOT YIELD” or “DO NOT CEASE”. It was the motto of the inhabitants of Mafikeng in 1990 during the siege by the Boere in the Anglo-South African War (1899 - 1902). It’s presently also the motto of the City Councel of Mafikeng. In 1994 Ms. Marina Krefelder suggested that we introduce the House system in our school whereby all students are divided into 3 houses or teams. Everything in the school is
done on a competition basis and points can be earned by students for their specific houses. At the prize-giving in October the winning House receives the beautiful Kresfelder Trophy. This trophy symbolizes the three branches of activities, namely academic, sport and culture in our school. The doves symbolizes peace and unity in our school.

We decide to name the three Houses after 3 famous persons connected with our school, namely Jackson (the first principal), De Meilon (an Air Scout during the First World War) and Proctor (a fighter during the First World War).

The Kresfelder trophy was won by Jackson in 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2006, 2007 and 2009, by De Meilon in 1996, 2003, 2004, and 2005 and by Proctor in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. By rewarding the positive things that happen in our school, the house System helps us to make our school a winning school.

Our school’s official birthday  is 7 August, 1932.
